The fifth CHeriScape conference had the overall theme of ‘Landscape in Imagination and the Virtual Future’. It took place in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) on 13-16 June 2016, at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, a stunning industrial conversion on the banks of the River Tyne in Gateshead. As in all CHeriScape conferences, the programme contained in equal measure both traditional presentations by invited experts, formal interactive discussion sessions in various formats involving all participants on the key issues, and dis- cussions of a wide range of poster presentations. Reflecting its overall theme, however, this fifth conference also included challenging and innovative creative and performative work. Not all the presentations were woven around words, but also around artwork and performative elements. A guided ‘town walk’ on the theme of ‘foodscapes’ and coach ex- cursions on the final day kept us in touch with landscape.
